Kids’ Sports Glasses Compared: BlueCut STEPH vs. PROGEAR Eyeguard vs. Rec Specs RS-40

Kids’ Sports Glasses Compared: BlueCut STEPH vs. PROGEAR Eyeguard vs. Rec Specs RS-40

When you compare kids’ sports glasses, the frame price is only one part of the decision. Prescription options, fit, warranty coverage and published safety testing matter too. Here is how BlueCut STEPH Kids compares with PROGEAR Eyeguard Kids in Medium and Liberty Sport’s Rec Specs RS-40.

STEPH Kids starts at $29.97 for the frame/base product. With our entry-level clear prescription lens package at $91.75, the starting total is $121.72 before any applicable shipping or tax. Custom prescription lenses are additional to the frame price for the competing models as well.

U.S. displayed prices and published information reviewed October 16, 2026. PROGEAR pricing is from E-Optician; the RS-40 price and retail policies are from Optics Outfitter, Liberty Sport’s official online retailer. Prices depend on size, color, lens configuration and promotions. The frame-price comparisons below exclude custom prescription lenses, shipping and taxes. BlueCut supplied the STEPH weight, TR90 material, prescription-support, lens-replacement and testing information. The 20-gram measurement covers the frame with lenses; prescription power and lens choice can change the finished weight.

A lower starting frame price

At the displayed prices above, the STEPH Kids frame/base product costs $69.98 less than the selected PROGEAR frame and $68.98 less than the RS-40 starting frame price. Those differences are approximately 70.0% and 69.7%, respectively.

That can make the upfront frame cost easier to manage when a family is replacing an outgrown pair or purchasing a second pair. For a child who needs prescription lenses, compare the complete configured order before deciding: the frame-price percentages do not describe the saving on a finished prescription pair. Retailer promotions can also change the final difference.

BlueCut’s $121.72 starting prescription total uses the 1.6-index clear lens package. Our 1.59-index polycarbonate prescription option is $94.75, giving a $124.72 frame-and-lens total before any applicable shipping or tax. Neither price establishes ASTM F803 compliance for STEPH.

Prescription support for children with more complex needs

For STEPH Kids, BlueCut does not apply a fixed cylinder cutoff. If your child has a stronger prescription or significant astigmatism, send us the full prescription and pupillary distance so our team can review the lens options and fit before confirming the order. Lens selection and the final price depend on the individual requirements.

Both competing brands also offer stronger-prescription solutions. The useful question is whether a provider can fulfil your child’s exact prescription, with the intended lens material and frame fit. A standard online ordering range may differ from the options available through a specialist laboratory.

20 grams for the frame with lenses, with a strap included

STEPH Kids has a TR90 frame. BlueCut measures the frame with lenses at 20 grams, giving parents a specific weight to consider alongside the fit. A custom prescription can change the finished weight, depending on the lens material and powers.

STEPH Kids includes an adjustable Velcro strap. PROGEAR also provides a removable neoprene band with a washable Velcro fastening, and the RS-40 comes with an adjustable strap. Check how easily the strap adjusts and where it contacts your child’s head. Strap comfort and retention depend on the individual fit.

Fit comes from measurements, not the age label alone

STEPH Kids has a published 130 mm frame width, 54 mm lens width, 17 mm bridge and 120 mm temples. Compare those measurements with a pair your child already wears comfortably. The Medium PROGEAR and both RS-40 sizes provide other fitting options; similar lens widths do not guarantee an identical fit.

Check the nose contact, the room around the eyes and how the strap holds the frame during movement. When other equipment is involved, check the combination with your child’s helmet or headgear rather than assuming compatibility.

Compare how each option manages fogging

FogEX™ is BlueCut’s own anti-fog ventilation technology, available as an optional upgrade with custom prescription lenses. Small ventilation holes are made in the lenses to improve airflow and help reduce condensation. The feature is built into newly manufactured lenses and needs to be selected when ordering them.

PROGEAR offers anti-fog gel, while the RS-40 lists ventilation features in its frame. Compare what is included, what costs extra and the care required for your selected lens package. These are different approaches; no controlled comparison of their fog-management performance is presented here.

A new prescription does not have to mean a new frame

When your child’s prescription changes, you can order replacement prescription lenses from BlueCut and keep the existing STEPH frame, provided it still fits and is in suitable condition. You pay for the new lenses rather than purchasing another frame. BlueCut provides a prepaid shipping label to send your frame to our lab for the lens replacement.

This gives families a way to update the prescription in a familiar frame. Rec Specs also offers help with replacement lenses through Liberty Sport or local retailers. For either competing model, confirm the replacement-lens price, shipping arrangements and procedure with the dispensing provider.

Two years of manufacturing-defect coverage

STEPH Kids is covered by BlueCut’s two-year warranty against manufacturing defects. This is a longer defect-coverage period than the 365 days published by E-Optician. BlueCut’s warranty excludes ordinary wear, accidental impact damage and loss.

Rec Specs has a different benefit: eligible complete prescription purchases through Optics Outfitter carry a lifetime protection plan that includes limited replacements for breakage and lens scratches. Its terms specify eligible clear single-vision products, replacement limits and possible charges for changes. The warranty descriptions should be compared by coverage as well as duration.

Which differences should guide your choice?

STEPH Kids combines a lower starting frame price with a TR90 frame, custom prescription assistance, an adjustable strap, included storage and a two-year manufacturing-defect warranty. Optional FogEX™ lens ventilation and a lens-only replacement service add options for managing fogging and future prescription changes. BlueCut also brings more than 40 years of optical expertise to its prescription service.

Published sports-standard compliance is a substantial distinction offered by PROGEAR and Rec Specs. Check the testing, prescription, fit and complete price together, then choose eyewear that satisfies your child’s intended use and any required standard.
